Detention of Bangladesh Opposition Leader Alamgir following Anti-government Demonstration

BANGLADESH: According to an official, charges have been brought against Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), after anti-government protest. Over the weekend, tens of thousands of demonstrators demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. At least one protester and one police officer died in the incident.

According to media reports, Alamgir, a 75-year-old Bangladeshi politician, was arrested following a purported attack on the chief judge’s residence. However, the AFP news agency claims he was accused of murder alongside 164 other BNP members following the police officer’s death during a demonstration.

Police claimed that the cop had been fatally hacked, and they named BNP members as the assassins. On Sunday, there were more conflicts between protesters and police in several areas. Numerous people suffered injuries.

Since former prime minister and party chairwoman Khaleda Zia was detained and sentenced to five years in prison due to allegations of corruption, Alamgir has served as the party’s leader. The BNP has been rallying against Hasina and demanding her resignation, along with a vote to be conducted under a neutral government, ahead of the anticipated elections in January.

BNP party spokesman Zahir Uddin Swapan reported that around 3,000 party members and activists were arrested last week, while Dhaka police have arrested at least 1,480 opposition activists since October 21, including nearly 700 arrested during Saturday’s demonstrations.

Since 2009, Bangladesh’s first president’s daughter, Hasina, has been in power. She has been accused of pursuing political opponents and activists, a charge she disputes. The long-standing rivalry between Hasina and Zia has dominated the Bangladesh’s politics.
